THE ADVOCATE

Before even arriving at Pitt-Johnstown even began, I knew that I wanted to be a part of the student-run newspaper. The Advocate was an incredible opportunity for me to grow as a writer and was an invaluable experience. I started out as a contributing writer, before quickly moving into a Copy Editor role. By the end of my first semester with the paper, I was promoted to News Editor for the remainder of my freshmen year (Spring 2017) and the first half of my sophomore year (Fall 2017).

By 2018, it was my time to show what I learned in previous roles and lead the paper as Editor-in-Chief, a role I held for the entirety of 2018. While in that role, I was able to raise our advertising revenue by 30% and online readership by 22%. During my senior year, I took a step back and acted as the paper’s Assistant Managing Editor. In this role, I oversaw the successful launch of the paper’s Instagram account, @upj_adovcate.

Stories

Over the course of 2.5 years, I had over 80 published works. Below you can find some of the ones I am most proud of. For more writing that was published in The Advocate, please click here.

Page Designs

Part of my duties as News Editor included creating weekly page layouts for the news section. I used Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and InCopy to create the weekly layouts.

Instagram

I launched The Advocate's Instagram in September 2019. I posted at least twice a week, highlighting a story from the paper's news, features and/or sports sections. To create the assets, I built a template through Adobe InDesign. In addition to weekly posts, I created story-specific posts for holidays and other occasions. Below are select assets.
